Oliver Stokes

Consultant
Australia Pacific

A short intro from me, your consultant …

What is my academic background? Bachelor of Science, Major in Geology from Macquarie University, Sydney.

What is my technical background? 6+ years experience in the mining industry – including Gold exploration, open pit, and underground. Also includes geochemistry, geophysics and survey experience.

How long have I been with BMT? I have been with BMT as a consultant since November 2018

What sites do work at? The majority of sites are open-pit Gold in WA (these range from ‘top tier’ public companies to small private ventures). Other commodities include iron ore, nickel, copper, tungsten, bismuth, and fluorspar.

With BMT I’ve travelled overseas, including Vietnam, Philippines, Peru. I train both new BMT staff and our clients.

What is my favourite aspect of the role? I love meeting new people, teaching, and visiting a variety of sites. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the role, working through the challenges faced in the continuous operations of mines.

Why is accurately measuring blast-induced movement so important? Companies have invested money and resources into defining and extracting the ore.  It does not make financial sense to lose a large percentage of your deposit by not accurately accounting for blast displacement.

What do you do in your spare time? My hobbies include designing, building and flying drones, which has led me to be BMTs primary consultant for FED implementations in Australia. I also enjoy electronics, computing, home automation, and 3D printing.

How do we maximise value out of the BMT system? Communication! Tell me the primary concerns (i.e. ore loss, dilution, misclassification) and I will focus on supporting that goal. The Grade Control team should feel comfortable with the equipment and be confident calling me up if they have questions.
